Mohammad Amir Reveals His Preference to Play IPL Instead of PSL

Mohammad Amir has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind — and the left-arm pacer has once again made headlines with his latest comments about the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Appearing on a podcast hosted on Quetta Gladiators’ official YouTube channel, the former Pakistan fast bowler was asked a straightforward question: if the IPL and PSL clashed in the same window once again, and he was eligible to play in the IPL, which tournament would he choose? Amir didn’t hesitate for a second with his answer.

“Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I’ll definitely play in the IPL. I’m saying this openly.”

Mohammad Amir’s response is bound to stir debate among fans, especially in Pakistan, where the PSL has grown into a powerful domestic brand and source of national cricketing pride as an answer to the IPL.

However, Amir’s perspective also reflects the reality of modern-day franchise cricket, where financial rewards, global exposure, and high-level competition often play a decisive role in a player’s career choices.

For context, Amir has already retired from international cricket with Pakistan and currently plies his trade in various T20 leagues around the world. He has never hidden his fondness for the IPL, and he may be eligible soon as he is reportedly close to acquiring a British passport, which has further expanded his options, including the possibility of featuring in the Indian league as a foreigner in a tournament historically off-limits to Pakistani cricketers since 2008.

While Amir’s statement is refreshingly honest, it’s not without precedent. Many players across the cricketing world have made similar decisions when balancing domestic league commitments with IPL opportunities. Several internationals have already given up domestic contracts as they seek more opportunities in franchise cricket.

However, hearing it from a Pakistani cricketer — and one still active in the PSL with Quetta Gladiators — makes the comment stand out even more. It’s a reminder of the IPL’s pulling power and the professional realities facing modern cricketers who operate in a highly competitive and globalized T20 ecosystem.

For now, Mohammad Amir remains a key player in the PSL and an integral part of Quetta Gladiators’ plans instead of an IPL team. But should the doors of the neighboring league open for him in the future — thanks to his UK citizenship — it’s clear where his preference lies.

And in a sport where opportunities are fleeting, Mohammad Amir is simply making it known: if the chance comes, he’s ready to take it.
