Pakistan’s squash resurgence will continue with Noor Zaman, who has officially qualified to represent the nation at The World Games 2025, scheduled to take place in Chengdu, China, from August 7 to 17. His selection marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to reclaim its historic prominence in the sport.
At just 21, Noor Zaman has rapidly ascended the ranks of international squash. The Peshawar-born athlete and grandson of squash legend Qamar Zaman recently clinched the U23 World Squash Championship title in Karachi. In a thrilling five-set final, he overcame Egypt’s Karim El Torkey, showcasing remarkable resilience and skill.
He will once again carry the nation’s hopes when he competes in the event later this year.
Noor Zaman will also have one of Pakistan’s most seasoned squash players for company at The World Games — Nasir Iqbal. Nasir, once ranked among the world’s top 50, has made a commendable return to form. In November 2024, he reached the final of the Chief of Air Staff International Squash Championship in Islamabad, ultimately finishing as runner-up to Zaman.
The World Games is an international multi-sport event featuring disciplines not contested in the Olympics. The 2025 edition will see squash athletes from around the globe compete at the highest level. The sport has been a staple of The World Games since 1997, with the exception of 2001.
Pakistan’s inclusion of both a rising star and a seasoned veteran — Zaman and Iqbal, respectively — reflects a balanced approach to international competition. Their participation not only symbolizes individual achievement but also represents the nation’s broader ambitions to reclaim its storied status in the world of squash.
Squash competitions at The World Games will be held from August 8 to 12, with all eyes on Pakistan’s contingent and how they fare.
