The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it would bar Harvard University from enrolling international students unless the university complies with demands that would subject it to external political oversight.
President Donald Trump, frustrated with Harvard — an institution that has produced 162 Nobel laureates — has lashed out at the university for refusing to submit to federal scrutiny over its admissions policies, hiring practices, and perceived political leanings.
“If Harvard cannot confirm that it is fully adhering to federal reporting requirements, it will lose the privilege of enrolling foreign students,” said a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
Calling Harvard a “joke,” Trump declared that the university should be stripped of its federal research funding after rejecting his administration’s call for external supervision.
Additionally, the Trump administration has threatened to prohibit Harvard from accepting foreign students if it does not comply with the demands. Media reports also suggest that officials are weighing whether to revoke the university’s tax-exempt status.
“Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds,” Trump posted on Truth Social, further saying the school should not be considered among the world’s great academic institutions.
The administration’s frustration stems from Harvard’s refusal to accept government oversight over admissions criteria, staff recruitment, and political perspectives, unlike other schools such as Columbia University, which have complied with narrower demands. The administration argues elite universities are ideologically skewed too far to the left.
Harvard President Alan Garber firmly rejected the government’s push, stating that the university “will not negotiate its independence or constitutional rights.”
— Tax Exemption Threatened —
This week, Trump ordered a freeze on $2.2 billion in federal research funding to Harvard, a global leader in medical and scientific research.
He also suggested on Tuesday that the school should lose its non-profit tax-exempt status unless it capitulates to the administration’s demands. According to CNN and The Washington Post, the IRS is now considering such action following a presidential request.
However, White House Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields told AFP that any action from the IRS would be “conducted independently of the President.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security reiterated that Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, who currently make up 27.2% of its student body, hinges on its compliance with federal guidelines.
The controversy has attracted attention beyond politics. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr voiced his support for Harvard while wearing a university T-shirt, calling the administration’s demands “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” and affirming his support for academic freedom.
— Push for Political Oversight —
The frozen federal funds largely relate to research contracts, particularly in the medical field, where Harvard’s labs are instrumental in the development of new treatments and medicines.
The Trump administration has justified its campaign against elite universities as a response to what it claims is widespread anti-Semitism and the influence of left-leaning diversity initiatives. These allegations have intensified amid campus protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, particularly at institutions like Columbia University, which agreed to federal oversight of its Middle Eastern studies department to retain $400 million in federal funding.
Critics of diversity programs argue that conservative voices are marginalized on campuses and that such initiatives unfairly benefit minority groups over others.
In Harvard’s case, the administration is demanding an unprecedented level of federal intervention in the internal operations of the country’s oldest and wealthiest university. A letter from the White House outlined several conditions, including:
Eliminating race or national origin as factors in admissions
Blocking enrollment of foreign students deemed “hostile” to American values
Banning hiring decisions based on race, religion, sex, or national origin
Curtailing student influence in campus governance
Auditing faculty and students for “viewpoint diversity”
Overhauling programs accused of anti-Semitism or other bias
Imposing strict controls on campus protests
