X/Twitter is Replacing DMs with a Brand New Chat Platform

X (formerly Twitter) reportedly has plans to replace its Direct Messages (DMs) system with a new full-fledged chatting platform called XChat.

A software engineer for the company recently revealed the move, stating that the “whole entire DM’s will be gone soon.” This development is part of X’s ongoing shift in its approach to messaging and communication.

What is XChat?

According to X Software Engineer Zach Warunek, XChat will not simply replace the message request feature but will overhaul the entire messaging system. When asked about whether the new system would address message requests, Warunek clarified that XChat would be a more significant change. While specific details remain scarce, Warunek’s comments point toward a more dynamic messaging experience, which may include more secure and flexible ways to communicate.

XChat Features

Leaked information and screenshots have given some insight into the expected features of XChat. One of the key features is end-to-end encryption, ensuring that all messages sent through XChat are fully secure. This move aligns with the trend of adopting secure messaging systems seen in other platforms like Signal.

Other rumored features include the ability to transfer files, mark messages as unread, and delete individual messages for all users, which would provide more control over shared content.

Possible Rollout and Future Plans

The exact timeline for the rollout of XChat remains unclear. Rumors and leaks, including a screenshot of the XChat icon in the platform’s sidebar and statements from owner Elon Musk, suggest that the new feature could launch soon.

Musk has also previously said that he would completely ditch his phone number and only communicate using X in the coming months for messages and calls. This means there are likely more comprehensive features down the pipeline for X.
