The Punjab School Education Department has sought approval from the Chief Minister to start the summer holidays from June 1, despite the looming threat of a heatwave across the province.
According to reports, the department has already sent a summary to the Chief Minister. Secretary of Education, Khalid Nazir Watto, mentioned that due to the anticipated heatwave, the summer break may begin earlier than planned. However, the final decision on this will rest with the Chief Minister.
Earlier this month, the provincial government had already shortened school hours due to rising temperatures. A 30-minute reduction in school timings came into effect from April 7 and will continue until October 15. Schools now open at 7:30 AM, with closing times adjusted for both single and double shifts.
Despite the change in schedule, some parents are still concerned about students being exposed to extreme heat and are urging the government to consider declaring summer holidays sooner.
Teachers have also stressed the need for an early announcement of the holiday schedule, stating that uncertainty is making it difficult to organise academic plans and complete coursework in time.
