Former Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s roles in the national white-ball side, suggesting that both star batters should return to their original positions in the middle order. A clip of Younis sharing his views as a guest on a sports analysis show has been making the rounds on social media, sparking fresh discussion among fans and pundits.
Both Babar and Rizwan—once the backbone of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket—have faced mounting criticism for their recent performances, particularly for their slow, anchor-style approach at the top of the order. In the fast-evolving world of white-ball cricket, where explosive starts and high strike rates are the norm, the duo’s methodical style has drawn comparisons to the 90s cricketers, with many questioning their suitability as openers in the modern game.
Younis Khan, however, defended the pair, arguing that their talents are being misused at the top of the order. “Babar and Rizwan should definitely be part of the T20 side, but not as openers. Their original and best position is in the middle order, where they can anchor the innings and provide stability when needed,” Younis said during the show.
He emphasized that a return to the middle order would allow both players to play to their strengths, while also giving Pakistan the flexibility to field more aggressive openers who can capitalize on the powerplay.
