A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on April 19, at 11:47 AM, causing widespread tremors across Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The quake, centered at latitude 36.21 N and longitude 71.34 E, occurred at a depth of 94 km, approximately 69 km south of Ishqoshim, Tajikistan. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) is yet to confirm the exact parameters.
The quake caused alarm in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, with residents reporting mild shaking lasting a few seconds. No immediate casualties or significant structural damage have been reported, but authorities are assessing potential impacts in affected areas. The depth of 94 km likely lessened the tremors’ intensity in nearby regions.
This event follows a pattern of seismic activity in Pakistan, with a 5.5-magnitude quake reported near Rawalpindi on April 12 and a 5.6-magnitude tremor shaking Punjab and KP on April 15, as noted in posts on X. The PMD continues to monitor the region, urging residents to stay vigilant.
The EMSC’s LastQuake app encouraged eyewitnesses to share testimonies, aiding real-time data collection. Authorities advise residents to follow safety protocols, including “drop, cover, and hold,” during tremors. Further updates are expected as the PMD finalizes its analysis.
