Australian all-rounder Matthew Short has withdrawn from the Pakistan Super League (PSL X), with Islamabad United confirming a recurrence of the quad injury he sustained during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Short, 29, injured his quad while fielding against Afghanistan on February 28, missing the Champions Trophy’s knockout stages. Despite showing recovery signs upon arriving in Pakistan, a setback during training prompted United’s medical team to rule him out to avoid long-term damage.
Islamabad United, who drafted Matthew Short for his explosive top-order batting and off-spin bowling, have started PSL X strongly, relying on Colin Munro, Sahibzada Farhan, and Agha Salman to fill the batting void. Short’s absence has been felt, particularly with Andries Gous struggling early in the tournament. United’s management, known for data-driven decisions, opted for caution, with Sahibzada Farhan named as a last-minute replacement.
The Austrailian all-rounder’s withdrawal is a blow to United’s campaign, but the franchise remains optimistic about their playoff prospects. No timeline for his return to competitive cricket has been confirmed, though team sources suggest a focus on full recovery for future engagements.
As for Islamabad United, the three-time PSL champions will look to carry on their winning form as they take on Karachi Kings at the National Bank Arena tonight.
