The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively seeking a permanent replacement for interim coach Aqib Javed, whose contract ended after Pakistan’s disappointing Champions Trophy campaign in February. According to reports, Islamabad United coach Mike Hesson has emerged as a leading candidate to become the head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team.
Mike Hesson brings extensive experience, having coached New Zealand from 2012 to 2018, leading them to the 2015 World Cup final. Currently, the 50-year-old serves as head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2025), where he has praised players like Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan, notably calling Khan’s exclusion from the national squad a “disgrace.” His familiarity with Pakistani cricket and tactical acumen make him a strong fit, sources said.

The PCB’s search intensified after Aqib Javed’s tenure ended following a winless Champions Trophy group stage. While Saqlain Mushtaq was reportedly considered, Hesson’s name has gained traction due to his proven track record and prior interest from the PCB in 2019 and 2024. However, Hesson previously declined offers due to other commitments, and his availability remains uncertain.
Fans and analysts are divided, with some on X praising Hesson’s strategic insight, while others question the PCB’s handling of foreign coaches after Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten’s brief stints in 2024. The PCB aims to finalize the appointment before Pakistan’s white-ball tour of New Zealand, starting March 16, 2026. Hesson has not commented publicly, but the PCB is expected to approach him formally soon, sources added.
