Kuwait has enacted a new traffic rule that imposes a KD75 fine (around $250) on women caught applying makeup while driving, categorizing the behavior as distracted driving.
The regulation, which took effect on Tuesday, is part of a broader campaign to improve road safety and crack down on reckless driving nationwide.
According to Lt. Col. Youssef Al Rabah, applying makeup while driving is now treated the same as using a phone or eating behind the wheel. Repeat violations may result in harsher penalties.
This measure follows alarming 2024 traffic data, which recorded 284 road fatalities, including 11 children under the age of 14.
The regulation has gained rapid attention, with public figures and influencers in Kuwait helping to spread the word. On Monday, Kuwaiti columnist Laila Al Qahtani issued a warning:
“Ladies, beware: Starting tomorrow, applying makeup while driving will cost you KD75.”
This new rule is part of a wider set of amendments to Kuwait’s traffic laws, which include steeper fines and longer jail terms for serious offenses, all aimed at reducing road accidents.
