Australia Adds More Jobs to Skills Visa List

Australia is set to implement major updates to its skilled migration program, effective May 2025, creating new opportunities for professionals across the globe.

After launching the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) in December 2024, the Australian government has expanded the list to include more in-demand occupations eligible for key visas.

What is the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)?

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) is Australia’s new streamlined list of occupations eligible for skilled work visas. Introduced on December 7, 2024, it replaced older lists and is designed to better match the evolving needs of the labour market.

New Occupations Added to CSOL in 2025

Ten new technology and cybersecurity roles have been added to the CSOL, following validation by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). These occupations are now eligible for key Australian skilled migration pathways.

Newly Included Roles:

  • Data Analyst (ANZSCO 224114) – Interprets and analyses complex datasets to support decision-making in industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology.
  • Data Scientist (ANZSCO 224115) – Utilises AI, big data, and predictive modelling to forecast trends and solve complex problems.
  • Cyber Security Engineer (ANZSCO 261315) – Designs and maintains secure digital infrastructure to protect against cyber threats.
  • DevOps Engineer (ANZSCO 261316) – Improves software deployment and system reliability using automation and cloud-based solutions.
  • Penetration Tester (ANZSCO 261317) – Conducts ethical hacking exercises to identify vulnerabilities in security systems.
  • Cyber Security Analyst (ANZSCO 262116) – Monitors systems for security breaches and responds to cyber threats.
  • Cyber Security Architect (ANZSCO 262117) – Develops and implements comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks for organisations.
  • Cyber Governance Specialist (ANZSCO 262114) – Ensures compliance with cybersecurity regulations through policy development and implementation.
  • Cyber Security Advisor (ANZSCO 262115) – Advises organisations on strategic risk management and cybersecurity improvements.
  • Cyber Security Operations Coordinator (ANZSCO 262118) – Oversees security operations centres and coordinates incident responses.

Visa Options Under the New CSOL

Professionals with occupations listed on the CSOL can now access several skilled visa options to live and work in Australia:

1. Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Offers permanent residency without requiring employer or state sponsorship.

Requirements:

  • Occupation listed on the CSOL.
  • A minimum score of 65 points on the points test.
  • Positive skills assessment.
  • English proficiency at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

This visa is ideal for individuals seeking flexibility to live and work anywhere in Australia.

2. Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)

A temporary, employer-sponsored visa with a pathway to permanent residency.

Requirements:

  • Job offer from an approved employer.
  • Relevant skills and qualifications.
  • Minimum English proficiency (IELTS 5.0).
  • At least two years of relevant work experience.

3. Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
