Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the debut turn-based RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive, has quickly become a major success. Just days after its release on April 24, the game has already sold over one million copies, publisher Kepler Interactive announced on Sunday morning.
According to the development team, Expedition 33 reached 500,000 units sold within the first 24 hours. The latest figure includes units shipped to retailers but does not account for players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass, which means the game’s total player count is likely even higher.
A Dark Fantasy with a Unique Story
Expedition 33 follows a group of Expeditioners who embark on a journey to defeat the Paintress, a mysterious figure who paints a number on a monolith every year. All individuals of the designated age die immediately, slowly shrinking the population year by year as the numbers decrease.
Many are praising the game for its “gorgeously made and well-considered world” and calling it “a solid, enjoyable RPG.” Needless to say, the game’s detailed world-building, combined with its turn-based mechanics, has resonated strongly with players.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
A Success Despite Hype from Other Titles
Expedition 33’s success comes despite all the hype generated by The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, a highly acclaimed title that launched last week on April 22. The game managed to surpass 4 million players within just 4 days of launch.
This strong early performance, though not unexpected given the original Oblivion’s popularity (it sold three million units within a year), is certainly boosted by its inclusion in Game Pass. PC and Xbox subscribers can access the remaster as part of their existing subscription, making for much easier access.
