The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce a unified and modern framework for all ride-hailing services operating in Karachi. The initiative aims to improve service quality, ensure passenger safety, and bring greater regulatory oversight.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon chaired a recent meeting of the Sindh Transport Department, where officials reviewed progress on urban transport reforms.
EV Taxi Service and Vehicle Standards
The provincial government resolved to expedite the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service as part of broader efforts to modernize public transport and reduce air pollution. Minister Memon stated that the new EV taxis would help standardize services while promoting environmental sustainability.
He added that integrating existing ride-hailing operators into a single framework would improve fare transparency, vehicle inspection standards, and overall operational efficiency.
Officials also reviewed the performance of operational Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers in Karachi and discussed expanding the system across Sindh.
Free Scooters for Women
The meeting addressed financing models to provide EV taxis to the public through installment-based schemes. To support women’s mobility, the government plans to distribute 1,000 pink scooters free of cost to working women and female students in the first phase of its empowerment initiative.
Double Decker and EV Buses
Minister Memon announced that double-decker buses would arrive in Karachi by June, with an additional fleet expected between late June and early July. He confirmed that the government intends to relocate conventional buses from Karachi to other districts and replace them with a fully electric fleet.
To support this transition, authorities are rapidly developing EV charging stations, parking areas, and supporting infrastructure. The provincial budget for the upcoming fiscal year is expected to allocate additional funds for new bus procurement and transport upgrades.
