Spotify Gained 5 Million Premium Users and Made Over $500 Million, But One Number Doesn’t Add Up

Spotify started 2025 with strong momentum. Between January and March, the company added 5 million new premium subscribers, representing a 12% increase compared to Q1 2024. That brings the total number of paying users to 268 million, solidifying Spotify’s position as the largest music streaming platform in the world.

Revenue and Profit Hit Record Highs

The company also posted impressive financial results. Spotify earned a record operating income of €509 million (around $578 million) and generated €4.2 billion in total revenue (approximately $4.77 billion). These results indicate that Spotify is no longer just growing, it’s consistently profitable.

Monthly Active Users

Spotify reported 678 million monthly active users (MAUs) overall, including 423 million ad-supported users. However, when you combine those with the 268 million premium subscribers, the total appears to be 691 million. The 13-million-user gap remains unexplained, though it could be due to data categorization, user overlap, or rounding adjustments in regional reporting.

Spotify Still Ahead

Despite ongoing criticism about how little it pays artists, Spotify continues to lead the global music streaming market, far ahead of competitors like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music. It remains the top choice for music lovers and podcast listeners across the globe.

Spotify has continued to innovate by rolling out features like AI-powered DJs, smart playlists, and a growing catalog of podcasts and audiobooks. These additions have helped it stay relevant and drive higher engagement among both free and premium users.
