Tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated following the terror attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), but Indian media is making matters worse by using AI to spread fake videos and images online.
The recent terror attack in occupied Kashmir has triggered a surge in fake visuals and false stories on social media. This content is being shared virally and misidentifying victims. Instagram is mostly filled with such content and Meta has so far failed to address this issue.
One widely circulated video showed a couple dancing in the Pahalgam valley. Indian media used the footage of the actual couple who later confirmed it was unrelated to the terror attack and was filmed a week before it.
Other fake visuals depicting bodies in mountainous terrain have spread across X despite clear signs editing by AI toold, including unnatural facial features, distorted backgrounds, and inconsistent coloring.
The abundance of so much fake content online is increasing confusion and causing more tensions between the two countries. Both sides have yet to report anything positive regarding de-escalation as it stands.
