Kagiso Rabada Available Again After Drug-Use Suspension

South Africa’s chances of actually winning their World Test Championship final against Australia have taken a significant bump with the news that Kagiso Rabada will be available for selection.

Rabada is set to return to competitive cricket after quietly serving a one-month ban for testing positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 earlier this year. The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed that Rabada’s sample, taken on January 21 after an SA20 match between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants, returned a positive result. The 29-year-old was notified of the finding on April 1 while he was in India for IPL 2025 and left shortly after, with his franchise, Gujarat Titans, initially stating he had returned home due to “personal reasons.”

Now, nearly a month later, the full picture has emerged. Kagiso Rabada was sanctioned under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, which treat recreational drug use differently from performance-enhancing drugs. The South African was spared a harsher sentence after cooperating with authorities and completing an educational awareness program.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has also decided not to impose further punishment, stating that they were satisfied with Rabada’s apology and efforts to address the matter professionally. As a result, he is eligible to play again immediately and could rejoin the Gujarat Titans as early as Tuesday in their match against the Mumbai Indians.

Despite the resolution, the episode has raised questions about transparency and how franchises and boards communicate sensitive matters.

For Kagiso Rabada , the focus now shifts back to cricket. He finished as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in the current World Test Championship cycle, underlining his importance to the team.

With the WTC Final against Australia looming in June, Rabada’s return is timely for his national team and a chance for the fast bowler to put this episode behind him and reassert his value on the field. How he is welcomed back by the cricketing fraternity remains to be seen.
