Wrestling fans around the world were caught off guard by a major announcement from WWE just before the start of WrestleMania 41. During the pre-show, commentator Michael Cole revealed that the company has acquired the famous Mexican wrestling promotion AAA, marking a significant move in the world of professional wrestling.
Although the deal is expected to be finalized by the third quarter of 2025, WWE is already making big changes. As part of this new partnership, several top AAA stars are set to join WWE, including Hijo de Dr. Wagner, Hijo del Vikingo, La Parka, La Hiedra, Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla, and Niño Hamburguesa. The addition of some of these names was widely anticipated, but one signing in particular has surprised many.
Among the new signings is Alberto Del Rio, a name that has sparked plenty of discussion among wrestling fans and insiders. Del Rio, who previously enjoyed a successful run in WWE, was not expected to return to the company. In fact, reports had repeatedly stated that WWE had no interest in bringing him back, with sources insisting his return was impossible. However, the new deal with AAA appears to have changed the company’s stance.
Alberto Del Rio, whose real name is José Alberto Rodríguez, is no stranger to controversy. He first joined WWE in 2009 and quickly rose to fame, winning the Money in the Bank, the Royal Rumble, and multiple championships, including the United States and World titles. Despite his success, Del Rio was released in 2014 due to what WWE described as “unprofessional conduct.” He made a brief return in 2015 but was suspended for violating the company’s wellness policy before leaving again.
Outside the ring, Del Rio has faced several allegations of domestic and physical abuse, including accusations from former WWE and AEW star Saraya. These controversies have made his return to WWE a topic of debate among fans and commentators.
While Del Rio’s name has reappeared on WWE’s alumni section online, the company has not officially confirmed his new contract. Still, his inclusion in the list of new signings suggests that WWE is ready to give him another chance as part of its expanded partnership with AAA.
