Pakistan women’s squash could be witnessing the birth of an unprecedented dynasty, with two of its most promising players making history for the country at the US Junior Women’s Gold Squash Championship in New York.
Sisters Sehrish and Mahnoor Ali ended up on the podium after contesting the final against each other. In the final of the Girls Under-15 category, younger sister Sehrish beat Mahnoor in straight sets, 3-0, to win the gold medal, with Mahnoor, the top seed in the tournament, settling for silver.
Both performed brilliantly throughout the event. In the semi-finals, Mahnoor easily defeated America’s Halesz Sweet M 3-0, while Sehrish fought hard to beat Julie Yee 3-1.
Their success at the US Junior Women’s Gold Squash Championship isn’t the first time their names have been in the limelight.
This win only adds to the growing success of the Ali sisters in international squash. Just a few weeks ago, all three sisters made headlines in Australia during the Australian Junior Women’s Squash Championship. There, Mahnoor won gold in the Under-13, Sehrish won silver in the Under-15, and their eldest sister Mehwish Ali took gold in the Under-17 category.
All three are quickly becoming stars on the junior squash circuit. Their strong performances are a good sign for Pakistan squash, a sport the country once ruled during the days of Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan.
With more international tournaments ahead, the future looks bright for Sehrish, Mahnoor, and Mehwish. Pakistan squash fans will be hoping the sisters continue to bring glory to the country one match at a time.
