Aqib Javed Officially Gets a New Role in PCB

Aqib Javed will be responsible for shaping the future of the Pakistan cricket team after it was confirmed that the PCB has appointed him as the new Director of High Performance.

In his new post, for which he was a favourite, Aqib Javed will oversee all domestic developments and the preparation of the next crop of cricketers. The former fast bowler has ample experience in the role, having undertaken similar duties for Lahore Qalandars, where he helped uncover players like Zaman Khan and Haris Rauf.

The 1992 World Cup winner will also oversee the national high-performance program, including player development pathways, coaching standards, fitness protocols, and talent identification systems across all levels of the game.

Aqib Javed’s involvement in the PCB system isn’t just ceremonial—it’s strategic. The 52-year-old has been one of the most influential coaching figures in Pakistan cricket over the past two decades, including his stint with the national team.

Aqib’s appointment is a central part of Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s vision to professionalize Pakistan’s cricket ecosystem, especially from grassroots to the national level. The Director of High Performance role, vacant since Nadeem Khan’s exit, carries major influence over domestic cricket planning, youth academies, coaching appointments, and performance benchmarks.

Despite the positive headlines, the role comes with its own set of challenges. Pakistan’s domestic structure remains volatile, with frequent format changes, limited financial stability for players, and questions over the quality of infrastructure.

Furthermore, bridging the gap between domestic performers and national team consistency has long been a sticking point—one that Aqib Javed will be expected to address with firm policies and transparency.

With Mike Hesson taking over as the white-ball coach and Aaqib Javed in his new role, Pakistan cricket is heading towards a critical period. This is an opportunity for the PCB to finally lay the groundwork for sustainable success that could serve Pakistan for decades.

Aaqib’s track record of turning potential into performance makes him well-suited to lead this evolution.

In Pakistan cricket, raw skill has never been in doubt—but systemized excellence has. Now, with Aqib Javed at the helm of high performance, the PCB appears ready to change that.
