Multi-Billion-Rupee Road Projects in Punjab Near Completion

Construction on two major infrastructure projects aimed at easing Rawalpindi’s growing traffic problems is nearly complete, with over 80% of the work finished, according to officials.

The projects include the Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road and two underpasses on Mall Road—one at TM Chowk and another at Mall Plaza Chowk. Together, the two projects are valued at over Rs. 6.5 billion.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has set a firm deadline of May 31 for the full completion of both projects, with teams working around the clock to meet the target.

The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, being built under the supervision of the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, is a Rs. 2.3 billion project. The construction is being carried out by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) with design and consultancy provided by Nespak.

The Mall Road Underpasses Project, costing Rs. 4.39 billion, includes the construction of underpasses at TM Chowk and Mall Plaza Chowk. The plan also features a new underground pedestrian walkway near the Medicine Market to improve pedestrian access and safety.

Officials say these projects will eliminate traffic signals at key choke points and greatly reduce congestion along some of the city’s busiest routes.

Looking ahead, the C&W Department is also planning additional infrastructure upgrades. New flyovers and underpasses are being considered for Kacheri Chowk, Qasim Market Chowk, and Chairing Cross Chowk. These will further improve traffic flow along Mall Road and Peshawar Road, eventually creating a signal-free corridor from Kacheri Chowk to the motorway junction.
