New Nursing Curriculum Introduced in Punjab

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has introduced a pioneering curriculum named COMPASS for its four-year BS Nursing program, slated to commence this academic year across all UHS-affiliated nursing colleges in Punjab. Approved during a meeting of the UHS Board of Studies in Nursing led by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, COMPASS signifies a departure from traditional teaching methods to a block-based, competency-focused educational model. Developed collaboratively by UHS’s Nursing and Medical Education departments, the curriculum emphasizes Competency-based, Outcome-based, Multicultural, Patient-centered, Assessment, Skills, and Safety principles.

A key feature of COMPASS is the doubling of clinical credit hours from 35 to 54. This new structure mandates nursing students to divide their time between classrooms and hospitals, engaging in clinical rotations starting from the first year. These rotations include three days per week in hospital settings, where students will work in alternating shifts to gain comprehensive exposure to patient care and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Prof Rathore highlighted the groundbreaking inclusion of cultural competency within the curriculum, a first in Pakistan. He emphasized that the program equips students with over 200 clinical skills and a meticulously designed suite of 72 courses, ensuring they possess both technical proficiency and global cultural awareness.

The COMPASS model integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, featuring simulation-based training and a focus on patient-centered care. It employs a spiral approach across eight semesters, progressively advancing course content complexity.

To uphold academic standards and ensure effective implementation, UHS will conduct surprise visits to all affiliated colleges each semester. These assessments will evaluate adherence to clinical rotation schedules, class timetables, student logbooks, and feedback mechanisms.

Recognizing the importance of faculty development, Vice Chancellor Rathore announced intensive workshops scheduled from June 1 to 15. These workshops aim to prepare nursing educators for effectively delivering the new curriculum
