The Punjab government is likely to announce early summer vacations for schools as extreme heat continues to disrupt academic activities, particularly in under-resourced private institutions.
Over the past week, rising temperatures have made it increasingly difficult for students—especially young children—to focus in overcrowded classrooms. The situation is particularly dire in small private schools operating in five-marla buildings across urban areas like Lahore, many of which lack basic facilities such as fans, drinking water, and proper ventilation.
Students in remote districts also suffer during midday hours when the heat becomes unbearable. School buildings constructed in violation of regulations have worsened the crisis, with limited infrastructure failing to provide a safe learning environment.
Despite a heatwave alert issued by relevant authorities, many schools appear ill-equipped to handle the rising temperatures. Parents, driven by affordability, are left with few options but to send their children to these schools, where conditions are far from ideal.
The Punjab School Education Department was earlier alerted about a potential heatwave from May 15 to 19, with warnings that temperatures could rise by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius. Authorities were advised to take precautionary measures to safeguard students.
Currently, summer holidays are scheduled from June 1 to August 9. However, given the alarming situation, the provincial government is expected to convene a meeting later this week to consider an earlier closure of schools.
