HEC Warns Students Against Rising Cyber Attacks

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has issued a public alert regarding a sharp rise in cyberattacks across Pakistan, warning that cybercriminals are using increasingly advanced techniques to deceive users and steal sensitive information.

These techniques include fake websites, malicious QR codes, and phishing scams designed to mislead individuals into revealing personal data or spreading disinformation. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the HEC urged the public to exercise increased caution online.

“Cyberattacks are increasing. Hackers are using deceptive links, QR codes, and phishing messages to access your data,” the HEC warned. “Avoid clicking unknown links. Confirm the source. Use antivirus software and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Your awareness is crucial to protecting yourself and the country’s digital environment.

The alert follows a surge in reports of cyberattacks targeting individuals through various online channels.

  • To raise awareness, the HEC shared a graphic outlining the common strategies cybercriminals are using, including:
  • Fake website links that closely resemble authentic URLs using lookalike characters or URL shorteners
  • Phishing messages that mimic trusted organizations’ branding
  • Compromised social media accounts distributing harmful links
  • Suspicious WhatsApp or SMS messages that pressure users to click immediately
  • Malicious ads or infected websites containing harmful downloads
  • QR codes redirecting users to unsafe sites
  • Files from unreliable sources that contain embedded malware

Safety Recommendations from HEC

To help users protect themselves, the HEC recommends the following safety measures:

  • Don’t click unfamiliar links — hover over them to verify the URL
  • Get updates and information only from official government or NCERT sources
  • Be wary of forwarded messages and unsolicited QR codes
  • Install antivirus protection, use MFA, and update passwords regularly

The HEC emphasized that individual responsibility is essential in securing personal data and maintaining the integrity of Pakistan’s digital ecosystem. By staying alert and implementing these precautions, users can significantly reduce their risk of falling prey to cyber threats.
