Power Generation in Pakistan At Highest Level in 4 Years

Power generation in April 2025 surged by 22 percent YoY (highest in 48 months) to 10,513 GWh.

The rise in generation is attributed to increased demand, driven by a reduction in tariffs, according to Arif Habib Limited (AHL).

Despite the increase, generation remained in line with the reference level. During 10MFY25, generation reached 100,661 GWh, reflecting a 0.4 percent YoY decline.

The cost of power generation rose by 8 percent YoY to Rs. 9.92/KWh, staying above the reference cost.

Local coal-based generation surged by 73 percent to 1,525 GWh.

Gas-based generation decreased by 14 percent YoY.

Wind power generation rose by 67 percent YoY.

Solar power generation grew by 2 percent YoY.

Nuclear generation improved by 73 percent YoY, but RLNG-based generation remained static at 0 percent during the period in review.

Imported coal-based generation reached 1,054 GWh in April 2025, 50.2x higher than in the same month last year.

Fuel Cost

The cost of power generation was Rs. 9.92/kWh in April 2025.

During 10MFY25, the average fuel cost was Rs. 8.78 per kWh, down 0.1 percent compared to 10MFY24.
