The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather advisory warning of dust storms and thunderstorms in various regions across upper and central Pakistan. The alert, released on Thursday evening, highlights the likelihood of strong weather activity starting from the evening of 23rd May through 24th May.
According to the PMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre, moist currents are currently penetrating the upper and central parts of the country. In addition, a westerly weather system is expected to enter the northern regions on 24th May, triggering intense weather events.
Areas Likely to Be Affected
The weather system is expected to bring:
- Duststorm/rain-thunderstorms (with isolated hailstorms) in regions including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, and several cities across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, such as Lahore, Gujranwala, Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, and Waziristan.
- Rain/wind-thunderstorms in Balochistan and southern Punjab, affecting cities like Zhob, Barkhan, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, D.I. Khan, and Layyah on 24th May.
Advisory and Precautions
The PMD has warned of possible damage due to wind and lightning, especially to loose structures like electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels. Farmers are urged to manage their agricultural activities carefully considering the forecast.
Significantly, the PMD noted that the current heatwave conditions in the upper parts are likely to subside during this period, bringing a temporary relief from high temperatures.
