Saudi Arabia to Use Drones to Stop Illegal Hajj Permit Holders

In a significant move to curb unauthorized pilgrimages during the Hajj season, Saudi authorities have begun using drone surveillance across the holy city of Makkah. This initiative aims to monitor and prevent the entry of individuals without official Hajj permits.

According to reports from Saudi state media, drone operations have already led to the daily arrest of hundreds of violators attempting to perform Hajj illegally. Among the detained are four Indonesian nationals suspected of promoting a fake Hajj permit campaign. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of an additional 14 individuals from their residence, none of whom possessed valid Hajj documentation.

AI Technology Enhancing Pilgrim Services at Medina Airport

In a separate development to improve the travel experience for legitimate pilgrims, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has installed 20 electronic gates (e-gates) at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina. These high-tech gates are designed to speed up immigration processes and reduce wait times for arriving pilgrims.

SDAIA is working closely with immigration and airport authorities to deploy artificial intelligence solutions that streamline entry procedures. In addition to the e-gates, over 30 advanced passport-reading devices have been installed to facilitate smooth processing.

To ensure uninterrupted service, dedicated SDAIA teams have been stationed on-site to respond quickly in case of any technical issues or system failures.

The arrival terminal in Medina has also been reinforced with extra personnel and four state-of-the-art fingerprint scanning units, further enhancing the security and efficiency of the immigration process for incoming Hajj travelers.
