Nearly 2,000 Govt Jobs Axed in Housing Ministry Overhaul

The Ministry of Housing and Works has eliminated 1,847 positions from its organizational structure, including both vacant and redundant posts.

Breakdown of Eliminated Posts

According to official sources, the ministry has axed 945 posts outright, while an additional 902 positions have been categorized as part of a dying cadre—a classification for roles that will no longer be refilled after current occupants retire or resign.

The ministry currently oversees 4,621 total posts, of which 1,361 were vacant before this exercise. The abolished posts span multiple departments under the Ministry of Housing and Works, including:

• 25 posts within the main ministry
• 1,598 posts from the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD)
• 66 posts from the Estate Office
• 50 posts from the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA)
• 51 posts from the Pakistan Housing Authority Foundation (PHA Foundation)
• 31 posts from the National Construction Company Limited (NCCL)
• 26 posts from PEPAC (Pakistan Environmental Planning & Architectural Consultants)

The abolition of these posts was formally approved by Housing and Construction Secretary Dr. Shahzad Bangash, who serves as the principal accounting officer of the ministry. The decision aligns with broader government efforts to streamline public sector operations and reduce administrative overhead.

The rightsizing policy aims to improve organizational efficiency, eliminate redundant roles, and optimize resource allocation across federal ministries. Similar actions are expected in other departments as the federal government continues its restructuring agenda.
