An alarming audit report for 2023-24 has uncovered the disappearance of arms and ammunition worth over Rs. 245.5 million from various institutions under the Punjab Home Department, triggering a formal inquiry, reported Dawn News.
The report, presented to the Punjab Assembly, highlights thefts and missing inventory across police offices in 12 districts. Not a single item has been recovered so far.
Among the most notable losses, the DPO Muzaffargarh office reported missing weapons worth over Rs. 83.4 million between 2021 and 2023. The DIG Operations Lahore office is missing arms and ammunition valued at Rs. 47.1 million, while weapons worth Rs. 46.8 million vanished from the Police Office Lahore.
Other districts also reported significant losses: Multan (Rs. 7.4m), Sialkot (Rs. 5.6m), Sahiwal (Rs. 4.3m), Okara (Rs. 3.8m), Gujrat (Rs. 3.5m), and Faisalabad (Rs. 2.6m).
In response, Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal has ordered a probe into the missing inventory. A committee led by the Additional IG Special Branch has been formed, with support from the DG Monitoring and Additional Secretary Judicial (Home).
The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 10 days, along with departmental responses to the discrepancies noted in the audit.
