Pakistan’s Captain Explains Sufiyan Muqeem’s Exclusion From the Team

As Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for the T20I series in Lahore, Sufiyan Muqeem’s omission from the team has caused a stir among fans and pundits alike. However, captain Salman Ali Agha has now explained the reasoning behind the decision.

Speaking at the Gaddafi Stadium, Salman addressed the omission and shared the team management’s rationale for opting for a different bowling combination. According to Pakistan’s T20I captain, the decision was largely based on the conditions expected in Lahore, where spinners haven’t been as effective in recent games.

“Spinners haven’t had much impact in Lahore lately,” he said. “That’s why we’ve added an extra fast bowler instead,” he explained.

He was quick to assure that Sufiyan Muqeem will be part of future series.

“I personally like Sufiyan a lot,” Salman said. “You will definitely see him playing white-ball cricket for Pakistan in the future. I believe he’s going to play an important role in the coming series.”

Although his explanation eases some questions, it will likely not suffice for some critics. Sufiyan Muqeem himself did not appear too pleased with the PCB’s squad announcement, as he made his feelings clear in a social media post.

The Pakistan squad for the series includes Abrar Ahmed as the main spinner, with Shadab Khan playing the role of a spin-bowling all-rounder and vice-captain. Khushdil Shah, Salman Ali Agha, and even Saim Ayub are handy emergency options. That left little room for a specialist spinner like Sufiyan, especially with the team opting for more pace options given the surface and conditions.

Sufiyan Muqeem, however, has impressed in whatever capacity he has been given a chance. He boasts decent numbers internationally despite seeing little action in recent months, including the PSL X where he played in just three of Zalmi’s games.

While fans may be disappointed not to see Sufiyan in action this week, Salman Agha’s words suggest that the young spinner’s time in green isn’t far off—it’s just a matter of the right place and the right pitch.
