92 News Debuts Pakistan’s First AI Reporter in Urdu

92 News has introduced what it claims to be Pakistan’s first-ever artificial intelligence (AI) news reporter, capable of delivering news bulletins in Urdu. The announcement was made through the network’s official Instagram page, describing the development as a significant shift in how news may be presented in the future.

According to the broadcaster, the AI-powered presenter is fully equipped to deliver real-time updates and pre-scripted news segments. The post announcing the rollout read:

Presenting Pakistan’s first-ever AI Reporter — only on 92 News! A bold step into the future of journalism.

This development marks a first for Pakistan’s mainstream media, positioning 92 News among the few regional broadcasters exploring AI in journalism.

The launch has sparked mixed reactions from media professionals and the public. While some have praised the channel’s use of innovative technology, others have expressed concern about the implications for human journalists, particularly in a job market already under strain.

The introduction of AI into roles traditionally held by reporters has prompted debate about the future of employment in media, and whether such advancements may replace rather than assist existing staff.

AI-generated news anchors have already made appearances in several countries, including China, India, and Kuwait. These virtual presenters are typically used for repetitive or routine bulletins and can operate around the clock. Their supporters argue they reduce costs and improve efficiency, while critics highlight the limitations in contextual judgment, empathy, and ethical decision-making.

Whether other news organizations in Pakistan will adopt similar technologies remains to be seen, but 92 News has set a precedent that is likely to influence the conversation around the intersection of AI and journalism in the country.
