Millions of WhatsApp users may lose access to the popular messaging app as Meta begins phasing out support for older smartphones starting June 1, 2025. The change follows an update to WhatsApp’s compatibility policy, citing security concerns and the need for more advanced operating system features.
Initially planned for May, the changes came into force from June 1. WhatsApp will no longer work on devices that cannot upgrade to at least iOS 15.1 or Android OS 5.0. This impacts several aging smartphone models, including iPhones released before 2014 and Android devices that cannot update past the 2014 OS version.
Affected iPhones include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which are not compatible with iOS 18. Similarly, Android models like Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z are also losing access.
According to Meta, older phones without the latest security updates or necessary functionality will no longer support WhatsApp, as outlined on the app’s official FAQ page.
WhatsApp began issuing alerts to users with outdated software, urging them to update to newer versions of iOS or Android to continue using the service. Those unable to update due to hardware limitations will lose access to chats and calls via the app.
Apple had previously classified the iPhone 6 as “obsolete,” meaning it no longer qualifies for official repair or service support, and even third-party vendors cannot source parts.
Users with older devices are encouraged to check for software updates and upgrade to a supported device if necessary. Those unaffected can continue to use WhatsApp as before
As WhatsApp evolves to include more advanced functionality, the app’s dependency on modern hardware and software is growing. These changes aim to enhance security, user experience, and performance, but they also mark the end of the road for legacy devices.
