Apple May Block Your Leased iPhone if You Miss Monthly Payments

Apple may be developing a system that can restrict leased iPhones when customers fall behind on payments.

Code found in the iOS 27 beta suggests Apple is working on a framework that would let approved financing or provider apps monitor whether a device contract remains in good standing.

The discovery follows a recent Bloomberg report that Apple may launch a new Apple Upgrade leasing program for hardware purchases through monthly installments.

How the System Works

According to 9to5Mac, the code refers to a system called App Managed Features.

The system would allow an authorized financing or provider app to enroll an iPhone and perform ongoing status checks. If the contract is no longer in good standing, Apple’s system services could place the device in Restricted Mode.

Restricted Mode would block access to most apps until the payment or contract issue is resolved.

Some Apps Would Still Work

The iOS 27 beta code includes a fixed list of apps that would remain available in Restricted Mode.

That list currently includes Accessibility Reader, App Store, Health, Magnifier, Phone, Clock, Settings, Wallet, Passwords, and the Restricted Mode interface itself.

Apps that can send critical alerts may also remain accessible. These could include Messages, Home, and certain medication or safety-related apps. However, the provider appears to have some control over those exceptions.

Subscriptions May Continue Billing

The code does not appear to pause or cancel App Store subscriptions linked to blocked apps.

This means users could still be billed for subscriptions even if Restricted Mode prevents them from opening the related app.

That could become an important issue if Apple launches a device leasing program and allows providers to limit access over payment problems.

No Fixed Missed-Payment Limit

The system does not appear to include a fixed number of missed payments before restrictions begin.

Instead, the financing provider’s app would decide when to lock the device based on its own policies.

This means the exact trigger could vary depending on the leasing or financing partner.

The iOS 27 beta also includes a new activation lock type called Partner Finance Lock.

This feature appears designed to stop users from erasing, reselling, or dismantling a restricted leased iPhone for parts.
