Hasan Ali’s Record-Breaking Spell Steals the Show at Edgbaston

Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali delivered a record-breaking performance, claiming six wickets—including a hat-trick—to propel the Birmingham Bears to a dominant 58-run victory over the Derbyshire Falcons in the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston on Sunday.

The Bears, riding high after consecutive home wins, posted a commanding total of 199 for 6 after being put in to bat. Openers Tom Latham and Alex Davies set the tone with a 79-run partnership. Latham anchored the innings with a composed 58 from 42 balls, while Davies provided early momentum with a brisk 49 off 29 deliveries. Although Derbyshire’s Pat Brown pegged back the scoring with figures of 3 for 40, the Bears’ total proved insurmountable.

Derbyshire’s chase unraveled almost immediately. The visitors slumped to 29 for 4 inside the first four overs, a collapse from which they never recovered. Ross Whiteley (50 off 37) and Wayne Madsen (46 off 32) offered brief resistance, but the Falcons were eventually bowled out for 141 in 19.1 overs.

Hasan Ali was the undisputed star, finishing with extraordinary figures of 6 for 23. He struck early to destabilize the top order, then returned at the death to dismantle the lower order, sealing his hat-trick by removing Whiteley (caught at long-off), Alex Thomson (caught at mid-on), and Ben Aitchison (bowled) in consecutive deliveries.

George Garton also made history, equaling the T20 world record for most catches in an innings by a non-wicketkeeper with five. Garton’s fielding was sharp throughout, including a return catch to dismiss Caleb Jewell and crucial grabs off Aneurin Donald and David Lloyd. He also contributed with the bat, smashing 12 runs off the final three balls he faced.

With back-to-back home wins, the Bears look increasingly formidable, while Derbyshire are left searching for answers after a disastrous start to their campaign.
