The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that parts of Karachi are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms today.
According to the PMD, Karachi’s weather will remain humid and partly cloudy over the next 24 hours. However, temperatures are expected to stay high, with maximum readings reaching between 36°C and 38°C. The humidity level in the city is currently at 73%, with warm winds blowing from the northwest at a speed of three kilometers per hour. The minimum temperature recorded in the last 24 hours was 30°C.
The Met Office had previously indicated on June 13 that a pre-monsoon weather system would begin affecting eastern regions of Sindh, including Karachi, from Saturday evening. Additionally, a westerly wave influencing the upper and central parts of Pakistan is expected to persist through Monday.
While Karachi prepares for rain, other parts of Pakistan are also experiencing varied weather conditions. The PMD reported that partly cloudy skies with dust storms, rain, and thundershowers are likely at isolated locations in northeast and south Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, southeast Sindh, northeast Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Light to moderate rainfall has already been recorded in cities such as Gujrat, Mangla, Sialkot, Islamabad, Murree, Mir Khani, Kalam, Dir, Drosh, Rawalakot, and Gupis.
The extreme heat that dominated recent days was evident on Saturday, when Turbat and Pasni in Balochistan recorded the country’s highest temperatures at a scorching 49°C. In Karachi, the prolonged hot spell has raised concerns about heatstroke and dehydration, particularly during peak daytime hours. The PMD has advised residents to stay hydrated and take precautions, especially during the humid and warm conditions expected today.
Local authorities and residents are urged to remain cautious, as gusty winds and thunderstorms could pose risks, including potential damage to loose structures like electric poles, trees, and billboards. The PMD recommends staying indoors during heavy showers and avoiding open areas to minimize exposure to lightning or strong winds.
