The Sindh government has granted Rs4.7 million to support boxer Aliya Soomro for an international tournament in Dubai this August, where she will face an Indian opponent.
The 19-year-old Lyari native, speaking to the media, called the sponsorship from Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah a “dream come true.” She noted her opponent’s name will be confirmed a week before the event.
Soomro, who became Pakistan’s first female world boxing champion earlier this year by knocking out Thailand’s Sothida Gunya Noch in 45 seconds in Bangkok to win the WBA Asia 105-pound title, has inspired many. Her father, a daily wage earner and former aspiring footballer, motivated her journey, which she dedicates to “girls dreaming big in Pakistan’s streets.”
Following her Bangkok victory, CM Shah hosted a ceremony at CM House, awarding her Rs1 million and a Sindhi Ajrak. UNICEF recognized her as a child with extraordinary talent, citing her undefeated national record.
On May 20, MPA Shazia Karim moved a resolution in the Sindh Assembly to honor her achievements. CM Shah recently reaffirmed the government’s commitment to mentoring women athletes, wishing Soomro success as she prepares for bigger challenges.
