Water levels at Tarbela Dam have fallen alarmingly due to a prolonged dry spell, raising serious concerns over reduced hydroelectric power production.
As of now, the water level at the dam stands at 1,450.85 feet—just 48 feet above the critical dead level of 1,402 feet. The dam’s maximum capacity is 1,550 feet, meaning current levels are nearly 100 feet below optimal storage.
A spokesperson for the dam warned that if the dry weather continues, water levels could fall even further. Despite all 17 power generation units being operational, they are producing only 1,413 megawatts of electricity—well below the dam’s full capacity of 4,888 megawatts—due to the limited water supply.
The current inflow is 177,400 cusecs, with an outflow of 151,800 cusecs. Experts from the Ministry of Energy caution that continued lack of rainfall could not only worsen electricity shortages but also disrupt irrigation across the country.
