UAE Develops Solar Device That Generates Electricity and Water

A research team at Khalifa University has created a solar-powered system that can generate electricity and produce clean water at the same time. By combining concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology with membrane distillation, the innovative setup addresses pressing global concerns around energy and water scarcity.

This integrated design captures waste heat from solar panels and repurposes it for thermal water purification, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional methods that usually depend on fossil fuels or separate energy sources.

Research Published in Energy Journal

The breakthrough, spearheaded by Dr. Mohamed Ali, Dr. Kabir Ali, and Dr. Mostafa Ismail from the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, was featured in the international journal Energy.

“Rather than letting solar heat go to waste, we use it to produce clean drinking water,” explained Dr. Mohamed Ali. “This approach supports sustainable development in off-grid or remote areas, where reliable access to power and clean water is often lacking.”

Advanced Simulation and Testing

Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the researchers simulated how the system would perform under varying conditions, including different seasons, sunlight levels, and water flow rates. Lab experiments confirmed the model’s accuracy, showing that water production peaked during summer afternoons, while electricity output was highest at midday.

Energy Efficiency and Practical Use

The hybrid unit consumes minimal energy—mainly for pumping water—making it significantly more efficient than traditional desalination systems. However, the researchers acknowledge that challenges such as long-term durability in extreme weather and large-scale deployment still need to be addressed.

Nonetheless, the innovation marks a promising step toward sustainable, off-grid technologies suited for arid and underserved regions.
