Back in the Spotlight: Pakistan’s Nations Cup Final Marks a Turning Point for National Hockey

After a spirited and passionate campaign, Pakistan Hockey Team has reached the finals of theFédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) Nations Cup 2025 to face-off against New Zealand. The Pakistani team has managed to win millions of hearts not just in Pakistan but across the world. They have reignited conversations that have long been overdue about Pakistan’s hockey legacy, its decline, and the road to revival.

For younger fans, it might be hard to imagine, but hockey wasn’t just any other sport in Pakistan,it was the pinnacle of sport in the country. Between 1960 and 1994, Pakistan stood tall on the global stage, with three Olympic gold medals, four World Cup titles, and a long list of Champions Trophy and Asian Games victories. Icons like Samiullah, Sohail Abbas, and Shahbaz Ahmed weren’t just national heroes, they were global legends. The country introduced innovations like the Champions Trophy itself, thanks to visionaries like Air Marshal Nur Khan.

But as the game evolved globally, Pakistan struggled to keep pace. The transition from grass to AstroTurf in the 1980s changed how hockey was played as speed and strength began to outweigh technique and stickwork, long known as Pakistan’s strengths. With limited access to modern facilities, domestic talent began to fade. At the same time, the public eye shifted elsewhere. Cricket soared, TRPs rose, music shows and entertainment took over, and the national sport slowly slipped into the background.

For over two decades, Pakistan’s hockey saw mixed fortunes. After winning the Champions Trophy in 1994, major wins became scarce. By the late 2000s and 2010s, Pakistan missed out on World Cups and Olympics, which was a sharp fall from the days when anything less than gold was a disappointment. The last notable international title came in 2018. Since then, the team has faced more rebuilding years than winning ones.

Yet, through all this hardship, the passion never truly left and neither did the potential.

This year’s Nations Cup campaign is a reminder that Pakistan’s hockey spirit is very much alive. The semi-final victory over France, decided in a tense penalty shootout (3–2), brought pride and belief back into the national conversation. It also showed what can happen when the right support, training, and focus come together even after years of silence.

President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, Mir Tariq Hussain Bugti, praised the team for their brave performance and called for greater institutional support in his social media post. “Hockey is our national game and deserves the full backing of the government, sports bodies, and every Pakistani,” he said. Moreover, he also extended his appreciation to PTCL and Ufone 4G, who stood with the national team, when no one else did.

He further added, “Their continued support reflects a growing need for brands to step in where it matters. Just as PTCL Group backed Arshad Nadeem early in his journey long before Olympic gold and their investment in Pakistan hockey is a quiet but important example of what long-term commitment to national talent looks like.

Not only this, the biggest cricket icon Babar Azam also congratulated the Pakistan Hockey Team on reaching the final in his Instagram story.

For Pakistan to return to the top, more such partnerships are needed that are built not just on sponsorships, but on belief and trust. This final will mark the end of a tournament, but regardless of the outcome, it will serve as a reminder that the game which once made us proud still holds a future worth fighting for!
