Slovenia Launches One-Year Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

Beginning November 21, 2025, Slovenia will open its doors to international remote workers through a newly introduced one-year residence permit. Aimed at digital nomads, the permit offers eligible individuals the opportunity to live in Slovenia while working remotely for employers or clients outside the country.

This marks the first official pathway for remote professionals in Slovenia’s immigration system. The permit allows applicants to experience the country’s rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes, all while staying outside the local labor market.

Who Is Eligible?

The program is designed specifically for non-EU/EEA nationals who work remotely. Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Employed by a company headquartered outside Slovenia
  • Working as a freelancer or contractor for an international client
  • Self-employed, offering digital services to clients abroad
  • Importantly, work for Slovenian clients or companies is strictly prohibited.

Permit Duration and Renewal Policy

The visa grants a 12-month stay and cannot be renewed consecutively. However, applicants can reapply six months after their previous visa expires, offering a flexible option for those interested in returning.

Financial Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate financial self-sufficiency. Supporting documents may include:

  • Contracts of employment or service
  • Recent salary slips
  • Bank statements showing regular income

The exact minimum income threshold will be outlined by the Slovenian authorities.

Application Process

There are two main application routes:

  • From abroad: Apply at a Slovenian embassy or consulate
  • From within Slovenia: Submit your application at a local administrative unit

Applicants already in Slovenia will be issued a temporary residence certificate while their application is under review.

Family Members Can Join

Dependents such as spouses and children are eligible for residence permits aligned with the primary applicant’s visa duration. However, they are not permitted to work in Slovenia unless they also qualify as remote workers under the same guidelines.

Restrictions

The digital nomad visa does not permit:

  • Employment with Slovenian companies
  • Operating a business within Slovenia
  • Generating income from any Slovenian source

Violations may result in visa cancellation and future bans from entering Slovenia.

Why Choose Slovenia?

With its breathtaking alpine landscapes, rich culture, and comparatively low cost of living, Slovenia is positioning itself as a new hotspot for digital nomads in Europe. This visa offers a structured and legal avenue for remote professionals to enjoy life in the heart of the continent without immigration complications.
