Pakistan’s FIH Pro League Participation Hinges on $2.5 Million Funding Says PSB Chief

Pakistan’s hopes of returning to the FIH Pro League, the world’s premier international hockey circuit, are facing a familiar and frustrating roadblock: money.

Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Yasir Pirzada, confirmed in a press conference on Wednesday that the national team’s participation in the upcoming season of the Pro League depends on securing a substantial sum of$2.5 million. The figure, he stated, is required to fund the team’s logistics, preparation, and participation across the globe over the course of the league.

Pakistan is reportedly set to return to the FIH Pro League after New Zealand had to drop out due to funding issues as well. Once synonymous with Olympic golds and World Cup glory, Pakistan has in recent years slid to the periphery of elite-level competition. The Pro League offers a rare opportunity to re-establish a foothold among the world’s best, playing against the likes of the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Australia on a regular basis.

But consistent participation comes at a cost, and the lack of corporate or state-backed funding has left the PHF scrambling. While the sports board will likely cover some expenses for the event, the PHF will need significant sponsorship deals to make Pakistan’s participation in the Pro League a reality. Secretary General of Pakistan Hockey Federation, Rana Mujahid Ali, has assured the fans that PHF is working on a solution, but the ultimate decision remains up in the air.

With FIH deadlines looming, Pakistan’s re-entry into the league now hangs in the balance. As the rest of the world gears up for another Pro League cycle, Pakistan once again finds itself in a financial scramble while the nation’s proud hockey legacy remains at stake.
