This Device Can Turn Your Dreams Into AI Movies by Just Speaking

AI-generated videos often tend to be trippy, with objects and environments morphing and shifting constantly into bizarre realities, quite similar to dreams. That is exactly what the Dream Recorder AI device is capitalizing on with the promise to bring your dreams to life with trippy AI videos.

Dream Recorder is made by a Dutch design and innovation studio called Modem Works, which specializes in open-source projects. Modem Work’s projects often bring together conceptual art and hardware, and their latest device can visualize your dreams by speaking your dream recollection into it. Dream Recorder is able to understand any language and does not need specific descriptions to work properly.

That transcription is then sent to ChatGPT, which organizes the raw thoughts into a coherent script of your subconscious. The story is then handed off to Luma AI, which transforms it into surreal, dreamlike videos. These visuals, deliberately hazy and low in detail, aim to mirror how we actually recall our dreams: not with precision, but through vague impressions and emotions.

The recorded dreams are stored locally in a digital personal dream journal, allowing you to revisit or reflect on any session whenever you like. The device operates independently; there’s no need to connect it to a phone, app, or cloud service. Powered entirely by open-source software, it functions offline and gives you full control and ownership over your dream data.

Here is what it looks like.

Modem took to X to reveal its latest creation, an open-source device designed to sit quietly on your nightstand, glowing softly in the dark like a modern reimagining of a dream catcher. The software behind it is fully customizable and freely available, and the entire device can be 3D printed at home by users.

Modem Works has even listed the components and their costs if you want to build the Dream Recorder device yourself. The total cost of materials adds up to €285 through Amazon, minus any shipping or potential taxes. The AI cost of generating a single dream is $0.15 ($0.01 for ChatGPT’s text-to-speech + $0.14 for LumaLabs dream generation).

All of this can be found on their GitHub page.
