Pakistan Confirms Participation in Hockey Asia Cup in India Despite Tensions

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced that the national team will take part in the upcoming Senior Hockey Asia Cup, to the surprise of many.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid confirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the tournament. The event is scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 7 in India, and the PHF issued no clarification on whether Pakistan will travel to India or request a hybrid model, similar to their respective cricket teams.

While the confirmation has brought some optimism for hockey fans, questions remain about how the plan will materialize given the tense political relationship between Pakistan and India. The two countries have had strained ties for decades, which worsened this year due to another Pakistan-India conflict.

So far, no detailed plan has been shared publicly on how this sensitive matter will be resolved.

Despite the uncertainty, the PHF leadership appears determined not to miss this important competition. The Asia Cup is a key event in the Asian hockey calendar, and the 2025 edition will serve as a direct qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup.

For Pakistan, whose hockey team has faced funding issues and a lack of international exposure in recent years, the Asia Cup represents a vital chance to compete at a high level and rebuild their standing in world hockey.

As the tournament dates approach, attention will now turn to whether both governments will cooperate to allow Pakistan’s participation. If successful, it could also open the door for more sporting exchanges between the neighbours in the future.

For now, the PHF has made its intentions clear. Pakistan’s players will prepare for the tournament whether that takes place in India or anywhere else.
