Youngster Ends His Life After Failing to Pay Rs. 50,000 Electricity Bill

A tragic incident occurred in Gujranwala where a young man took his own life after being unable to arrange Rs50,000 required for the release of his father, who had been jailed in a power theft case, reported 24NewsHD TV.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Aroop Police Station. According to the bereaved family, officials from the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) had registered a case against Anwar, a resident and small homeowner, in April 2025, accusing him of electricity theft. He was fined Rs100,000 and subsequently handed over to police, who sent him to jail.

The victim’s family stated that the young man had been desperately working to collect Rs50,000 as a partial payment demanded by GEPCO for his father’s release, with the remaining balance to be paid in instalments. Despite his efforts, he was unable to raise the amount. Distraught by the situation, he reportedly consumed acid and later passed away.

His mother revealed that the family had been living without electricity for the past two and a half months. She said her son had been under immense stress and ended his life after failing to gather the required funds.

Responding to the incident, GEPCO officials denied any wrongdoing. They claimed the power theft case had been registered based on concrete evidence, and that the suspect was turned over to police following standard procedure.
