Pakistan on Verge of Missing Inaugural World Club Championship

Pakistan’s chances of fielding a team in the inaugural World Club Championship appear to be dwindling after a reported administrative error by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The World Club Championship is the revamped version of the Champions League T20 and is set to launch its new campaign next year. PSL champions Lahore Qalandars were reportedly set to represent Pakistan in the tournament, but the country’s premier T20 franchise looks set to be left out of the high-profile event.

According to Geo Super, the exclusion is not due to cricketing merit but a telling administrative lapse. While top leagues from Australia, South Africa, England, the Caribbean, the USA, and the UAE sent senior representatives to a pivotal meeting in London to chart the league’s course last month, the PCB failed to attend.

The session, held on the sidelines of the Cricket Connect Summit, was convened by the ECB and laid the foundation for what organisers hope will be a global showcase of the world’s best domestic T20 clubs, but no representative from Pakistan was present.

“The PCB was invited to send the PSL CEO to the meeting, but no one showed up,” a source close to the discussions confirmed. In effect, Pakistan’s absence has left their champions sidelined while rival leagues position themselves at the forefront of the next wave of franchise cricket.

However, Pakistan’s PSL champions may not be the only ones to miss the World Club Championship. Despite the BCCI endorsing the project, the IPL itself will not send teams to the opening edition. Instead, the competition will showcase champions from the Big Bash League, SA20, the CPL, Major League Cricket, and the ILT20.

With the T20 franchise landscape booming, the need for a unifying contest has only grown. The likely exclusion of the PSL is all the more striking because Pakistan’s league is widely regarded among the best T20 competitions globally for playing standard.

For the PCB, missing out will be more than just a symbolic setback as its players already get fewer opportunities to participate in franchise cricket across the globe.

While the world’s top T20 clubs prepare for the sport’s next global showcase, Pakistan’s champions will likely be watching from the sidelines—another reminder that in modern cricket, governance can matter as much as talent.
