Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, presenting Trump with a nomination letter addressed to the prize committee during a dinner at the White House.
The nomination comes as Israel’s military campaign in Gaza continues, with the death toll among Palestinians reaching 57,523.
Last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC), backed by the United Nations, issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant, citing allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The ICC accused them of deliberately depriving Gaza’s civilian population of essential resources, including food, water, medicine, fuel, and electricity.
“He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other,” Netanyahu said at the White House event.
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times by supporters and lawmakers, and has often expressed frustration at being overlooked by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
He has previously claimed credit for mediating between India and Pakistan, as well as Serbia and Kosovo, and has argued that he is more deserving of the prize than former president Barack Obama.
Last month, Pakistan also decided to recommend Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
However, after the U.S. joined Israel in military action against Iran, the move faced criticism from Pakistani lawmakers and civil society, and no official nomination was ultimately submitted.
Trump has also sought recognition for his role in brokering the Abraham Accords, which aimed to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab nations, and for his efforts to maintain peace between Egypt and Ethiopia.
Despite campaigning as a “peacemaker” who would resolve conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, both wars remain ongoing more than five months into his presidency.
