Pakistan experienced its hottest June ever in 2025, with temperatures breaking previous records across the country.
This trend is part of a global pattern, as a total of 12 countries, including Pakistan, Japan, Nigeria, and Spain, witnessed their hottest June in history, according to an AFP analysis of data from the European Copernicus Climate Monitor.
The extreme heat affected nearly 800 million people across Europe, Asia, and Africa. In Pakistan, the record-breaking temperatures followed an unusually hot spring. Alongside Central Asian nations like Tajikistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan, Pakistan also had its warmest April to June period ever recorded.
Japan, too, logged its hottest June since 1898, with coastal waters registering 1.2°C above normal. The heat has even disrupted the natural blooming of cherry trees. South Korea and North Korea also experienced their hottest June since recordkeeping began.
In China, over 100 weather stations reported their highest-ever June temperatures, many exceeding 40°C. Across Europe, 15 countries—including Spain, Italy, and Balkan states—saw temperatures rise more than 3°C above average.
In Africa, Nigeria and several central and eastern nations also faced exceptional heat, with South Sudan closing schools after students collapsed due to extreme temperatures.
Experts warn that such events are becoming more frequent and intense due to global warming.
