Virat Kohli Compares Wimbledon Pressure to India-Pakistan World Cup Clashes

Former India captain Virat Kohli has compared the intensity of watching a live match at Wimbledon’s Centre Court to the pressure-cooker atmosphere of an India-Pakistan World Cup encounter, describing the tennis venue as “maybe more intense” than cricket’s most storied rivalry.

Virat Kohli, who was in attendance with wife Anushka Sharma during this year’s Championships, was struck by the proximity of the crowd and the mental strain on players performing under such conditions.

“It felt like an India-Pakistan World Cup clash. Maybe more intense,” Virat Kohli said in an interview with a foreign broadcaster. “In cricket, you get to hide in the outfield. In tennis, there’s nowhere to go. The crowd is right there, breathing down your neck.”

The 36-year-old, who announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, is no stranger to high-stakes pressure, having played in multiple World Cups and high-voltage clashes against Pakistan. However, he admitted that what he witnessed in London gave him a newfound appreciation for the resilience of tennis players.

“Your legs are shaking from pressure in a World Cup semifinal. At Wimbledon, I saw the same thing—just in a different form. You miss a shot, the match can turn. Every point is like a delivery in a Super Over,” he added.

Virat Kohli’s comments come at a time when crossover admiration between elite athletes across sports is becoming increasingly common, particularly in global events like Wimbledon where stars from different fields often converge.

The right-hander’s words are particularly revealing given his status as a veteran of high-stakes Pakistan-India encounters. No game in cricket is as mentally draining and pressurising as a sold-out Pakistan-India match, especially in a knockout setting.

Despite stepping away from the Test format, Virat Kohli remains a central figure in Indian cricket and continues to draw attention for his insight and presence—on and off the field. His comments reflect the enduring relevance of his perspective, even if it is about tennis and not cricket.
