Hobart Hurricanes have been forced to reshuffle their squad for the 2025 Global Super League (GSL) but have hit it out of the park with key additions to their foreign contingent, including Pakistan’s Usama Mir.
The 29-year-old will be making his GSL debut but has plenty of experience in West Indian conditions after his regular stints in the Caribbean Premier League. The Hobart Hurricanes confirmed the signing of Usama Mir alongside Sri Lankan power-hitter Bhanuka Rajapaksa and West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen on Friday. The announcement was made via the club’s social media, welcoming the new additions.
The trio will likely replace Sahibzada Farhan and Mohammad Nawaz in the Hurricanes’ squad. Both Nawaz and Farhan will likely not be available for the tournament after being named in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Bangladesh series. The two are currently in Karachi, attending Pakistan’s white-ball training camp ahead of the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, which kicks off on July 20 in Dhaka.
Usama Mir’s inclusion will go a long way in helping Hobart’s quest for a title. His experience in varied conditions and his proven record against both left- and right-handers make him a valuable option in the Hurricanes’ pursuit of a maiden GSL title.
While Usama Mir has found his opportunities limited in the international game, the leg-spinner has become a mainstay in franchise cricket across the globe.
The 2025 edition of the GSL is already underway, with Dubai Capitals and Rangpur Riders earning vital wins. The Hobart Hurricanes are scheduled to begin their GSL 2025 campaign tonight against Dubai Capitals.
With the Hurricanes eyeing a deep run this season, the addition of Usama Mir offers a timely injection of experience and guile to Ben McDermott’s side and perhaps just the leg-spin spark they were missing.
For Usama Mir, it’s another chance of staking his claim for the national side.
