In a historic day for Italian cricket, Italy have qualified for their first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, edging past the Europe Region Qualifier and joining the Netherlands, who secured their place once again in the global event set for 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
The final day of the regional qualifier was filled with drama, with all four remaining teams still in with a shot at reaching the World Cup. But it was Italy and the Netherlands who eventually emerged with the two coveted spots.
Despite losing to the Netherlands in their final game, Italy did enough on net run rate to punch their ticket. Batting first, they posted a modest 134/7. In reply, the Dutch batters made a quick start and eventually chased down the target in the 17th over. But for Italy, that was just late enough as they needed the match to go beyond the 15th over to qualify on net run rate.
For the Netherlands, the qualification marks another chapter in their impressive T20 World Cup history. Though they didn’t need to rely on net run rate, their commanding performances throughout the qualifiers sealed their return to the biggest stage in T20 cricket.
With Italy and the Netherlands joining the party, 15 teams have now officially qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 namely Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, USA, and the West Indies.
The tournament will feature 20 teams in total, with three more spots to be filled via the Asia and East Asia-Pacific (EAP) regional qualifier, and two more from Africa.
As the road to the T20 World Cup narrows, Italy’s remarkable rise and the Netherlands’ consistency offer two contrasting but compelling cricketing stories heading into 2026.
