Emerging wicketkeeper-batter Haseebullah Khan has firmly shut down speculation about a potential switch in international allegiance, reaffirming his loyalty to Pakistan amid growing social media rumours linking him with England.
Over the past few days, online speculation emerged that the 22-year-old had moved to England with a view to exploring opportunities to represent the England national team. The chatter intensified after reports falsely claimed he had met with ECB officials to discuss his cricketing future.
But Haseebullah was quick to set the record straight. In a direct response via Instagram on Sunday, he made his stance crystal clear:
“I would like to inform you all that I have arrived in England in connection with my domestic county contract and sponsorship obligations,” he wrote in an Instagram story.
“I remain fully committed to representing my country, Pakistan, with utmost dedication and passion.”
Speculation around the future of the left-hander stems from his non-selection in any of Pakistan’s senior or junior squads. Despite Pakistan Shaheens preparing for two series, in England and the Top End T20 series in Australia, Haseebullah was not called up for either squad.
Haseebullah’s social media activity after being overlooked also reflected his frustration. His Instagram post, quoting poetic lines about injustice and patience, was widely shared, further igniting speculation.
“Inflict only as much injustice as you can bear yourself. Gather only as much patience as you have the strength to endure God’s wrath,” he wrote in Urdu earlier.
Despite oodles of promise, Haseebullah has been unable to carve out his place in Pakistan’s international setup. With Mohammad Haris and Sahibzada Farhan preferred over him as wicket-keepers, and Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman taking over the left-hander roles, the youngster has found himself on the sidelines for most of his career.
He has also failed to find a prominent spot in any of the local teams to showcase his talent, playing just a single game in PSL X for Quetta Gladiators.
At just 22 years of age, Haseebullah is likely to see his name called up sooner rather than later. At a time when Pakistan cricket is navigating generational transition and grooming its next crop of talent, players like Haseebullah remain integral to the process.
The rumours, while damaging, appear to have been laid to rest by the player’s own words. For now, Haseebullah’s focus is firmly on county cricket, refining his game, and staying ready for when the next call from Pakistan arrives. And when it does, he’s made it abundantly clear where his heart lies.
